If You Don’t Track Lead Sources, You’re Guessing With Your Budget
Sites spend real money on recruitment without knowing which channel produced which enrollment. Attribution basics fix that in a week.

Ask where your last ten enrollments came from. If the answer involves the word "probably," every budget decision downstream is a guess.
Minimum viable attribution
You don't need marketing-agency sophistication. You need each lead tagged with a source at the moment it enters the funnel, and that tag preserved through enrollment:
- Distinct entry points per channel. Separate web forms (or URL parameters) for each ad campaign, a dedicated phone extension or tracking number for radio, QR codes per flyer location.
- Ask, and record, at first contact. "How did you hear about us?" remains imperfect but valuable — especially for referral and word-of-mouth volume that digital tracking can't see.
- Never overwrite the original source. A lead that arrived via a Facebook ad and later got a reminder text is still a Facebook lead. First-touch attribution is the cleanest default for site-scale volumes.
Then report on it monthly
The table that matters has one row per source and four columns: leads, contact rate, enrollments, and cost per enrollment. Expect surprises. It's common to find a channel producing half the leads and a tenth of the enrollments — or a "minor" channel like physician referrals quietly delivering the majority of completers at near-zero cost.
Second-order insights
Attribution data improves more than budget allocation:
- Quality patterns by source tell pre-screeners where to probe harder.
- Retention by source — some channels produce enrollments that drop out at twice the rate. An enrollment that withdraws at week 3 is a cost, not a win.
- Feasibility credibility. Telling a sponsor "our last three dermatology studies enrolled 60% from our registry at $X per enrollment" wins studies. "We do a mix of things" does not.
One tagging discipline, one monthly table. Few operational habits return more per hour invested.
