Electronic informed consent has moved from novelty to normal in a few short years. Done well, it improves comprehension and documentation simultaneously — but sites that treat it as "the PDF, on a tablet" miss most of the value.

What good eConsent adds

Comprehension support. Embedded videos, glossary popovers, and section-by-section knowledge checks give participants multiple paths into difficult material. The evidence generally shows comprehension equal to or better than paper, with the biggest gains for complex protocols.

Real audit trails. Versions, timestamps, and every re-consent captured automatically. When an amendment lands, the system knows exactly who needs re-consent and can track completion — a spreadsheet-and-binder chore eliminated.

Remote consent workflows. For hybrid trials, consent conversations by video with synchronized document review extend the site's reach without weakening the dialogue.

What sites should watch

The conversation must survive. The regulatory core of consent is informed discussion, not signature capture. Build the workflow so the coordinator conversation remains central — the platform is the aid, not the replacement.

Accessibility is real work. Older participants, low digital literacy, and language needs don't disappear because the form is electronic. Keep a paper path available and let participants choose without stigma.

Version control across systems. The IRB-approved version, the platform version, and the printed backup must never drift apart. Assign ownership of that reconciliation explicitly.

Ask about data portability up front. Consent records outlive studies and platforms. Know how you'd export a complete, defensible record set before you need one.

The sites reporting the best eConsent experiences are the ones that redesigned their consent process around the new capabilities rather than digitizing the old one. The technology is an opening for better consent conversations — take it.
