GCP Isn’t Just for Study Staff: Training the Recruitment Team
Recruitment staff often get less compliance training than anyone — while doing the site’s most regulated public-facing work.

At many sites, the people making first contact with potential participants — callers, marketing staff, front desk — receive the least regulatory training of anyone in the building. That's backwards: recruitment is where IRB-approved language, privacy obligations, and the boundaries of medical claims all collide in real time, on the phone, unsupervised.
What recruitment-facing training should cover
The line between information and inducement. Staff should understand why the compensation can be mentioned but not emphasized, why benefits language is constrained, and why "the new treatment" is a prohibited phrase — not just that the script says so. People improvise under pressure; understanding survives improvisation better than memorization.
Privacy in outbound contact. What can be said in a voicemail (almost nothing condition-specific), what can appear in a text preview, who at a shared household may be told what. These scenarios happen daily and are where violations actually occur.
Script discipline with humanity. IRB-approved scripts are boundaries, not straitjackets. Training should rehearse handling the questions that go off-script — "does this drug work?" "what would you do?" — with compliant, humane responses rather than robotic deflection.
Documentation habits. Every contact logged, every opt-out recorded immediately, every adverse comment about a study experience escalated. The recruiting team is also a surveillance surface.
Make it recurring and scenario-based
Annual slide decks produce annual amnesia. Short quarterly sessions built around real scenarios — an actual difficult call, anonymized — keep judgment sharp. Pairing new callers with experienced ones for their first weeks does more than any module.
The payoff is symmetrical: fewer findings and better conversion. The caller who confidently, compliantly answers a hard question converts more candidates than the one nervously reading a script. Train for both outcomes at once, because they're the same skill.
Enrolling studies shouldn't be this hard
